So far, this book has been a wealth of information. My husband works for a crappy company who refuses to pay for physical therapy when their guys get injured. (And we live in a state where you can be fired or let go for any reason, with no documentation required... so no complaining is really allowed in the company!) Combine that with horrible insurance that is too expensive for any real person to afford, plus a blown shoulder, and you have a recipe for disaster. My husband does physical labor on a daily basis for work. His shoulder started hurting, and then began popping, even when he was just brushing his teeth or raising his arm. He went to a physical therapist for a consultation. They use the McKenzie method, so I decided to look it up to see if I could save us $200 a week at the therapist.Thank goodness for this book! It has a lot of common sense in it, like proper posture, etc.It has a nice range of exercises/ stretches for you to do in order to re-stregthen your shoulder and get it back to working condition. My husband is only on exercise #3, which has taken him almost a month to get to where he has almost no pain, but it has already worked wonders.(You only do the exercises one at a time and only move on to the next when you can do the current one pain free.)When you do this properly, it will take some time to get through it, but this book has already more than paid for itself.I highly recommend "Heal Your Own Shoulder" for someone who needs a step in the right direction with mending their shoulder pain themselves. (Of course, you should see your Dr. before starting any new regimen to ensure you don't have something very serious going on.)**I purchased this book with my own money. I have received NO compensation whatsoever to write this review. I rely on reviews from real people when making decisions about a purchase, and therefore write reviews in the hopes of helping others decide if a product is right for them.**
I'm seeing a PT for a rotator cuff injury, and wanted to see what this booklet might offer. I think it's important to point out that a rotator cuff injury is a common problem, and that this doesn't treat it. More importantly, you could exacerbate the injury by trying out exercises that may actually prove harmful. The author does tell you- after he's walked you through all the exercises- that if you're feeling pain with all the exercises, it may be rotator cuff and you should go see someone about it.
I purchased all of Robin McKenzie's "Treat your own..." books for back, neck and shoulder. I first learned of the McKenzie method from a physical therapist I was seeing when dealing with a pinched nerve in my neck, which was causing sever discomfort in my arm. The 'method' put me on the road to recovery. I now augment my McKenzie exercises with regular fitness exercises. At age 61 I'm in the best shape I've been in for many years. I still have issues with neck & lower back, but the McKenzie method continues to improve things for me immensely. I'll stick with McKenzie for life. It beats acupuncture all to pieces.
All the Robin McKenzie books on self-treating joint problems are excellent. I have used the well-written books on treating your own neck and on treating your own back with excellent results from the exercises and tips. So I recently got this book on shoulder pain. The exercises for the shoulder are similar to what I have been doing anyway after going to a physical therapist and shoulder surgeon several years ago and learning various home exercises which helped. I have a rotator cuff problem. Besides the illustrated and well explained exercises, McKenzie's books explain in easily understood layman's terms the mechanics and problems of joint problems and how to avoid stresses. The books are filled with helpful photographs and illustrations. I've been a believer in the McKenzie methods for years. Along with doctor appointments and physical therapy, his books for me have been a helpful way to do the needed exercises and to avoid surgery and cortisone injections. I do his back extension exercises daily and the shoulder and neck exercises as needed. A friend who is an orthopedic surgeon and has back problems himself gave me a copy of Robin's book on back pain and exercises to relieve it years ago. Started to work for me right away. Good physical therapists and doctors know about McKenzie's method and encourage these exercises. Some exercises I've been given by doctors and therapists have made things worse. I go with what helps. I probably could have used his knee books before I had two surgeries on my right knee for meniscus tears. Now, the products McKenzie sells such as the cervical roll haven't helped much. However, I use his original lumbar roll routinely behind my back when driving and it helps a lot.
Clearly written, to the point, a fast read and within days I saw a tremendous improvement.
Not helpful very basic.
This book was great in helping me with my shoulder injury. It has improved considerablysince I started following the exercises seriously. A great book to share.
Excellent guide for treating shoulder. Robin gives exercises that are practical and really helped slot.
